Pathways

Grades 8-12

Two Paths, One Foundation

Pathways takes equine science to a deeper level, encouraging students to investigate the complex relationships between genetics, physiology, health, behavior, and the environments in which horses live.

Building on foundational scientific knowledge, students explore more advanced concepts, evaluate information, and apply critical thinking to real-world questions and decisions.

The curriculum offers two directions: Immersion, for students interested in horses as part of their personal lives, and Enterprise, for those exploring professional opportunities within the equine industry.

Both paths share a foundation in equine science, but the relationship between them varies by topic. Some units explore the same concepts and investigations, while others approach shared scientific principles through different activities, responsibilities, and real-world applications. Certain topics will follow substantially different directions, reflecting the distinct interests and goals of each path.

Pathways is part of Mountain Dell Equestrian's long-term curriculum development. Resources will be introduced as the program expands.

Pathways - Immersion

Exploring a Life with Horses

There are countless ways to make horses part of your life, and no single path is right for everyone. Immersion explores the opportunities, choices, and responsibilities involved in recreational participation in the equestrian world.

Students investigate different approaches to horse ownership and access, including owning, leasing, and other arrangements. They'll discover the wide variety of equestrian activities, from recreational riding and local competitions to breed shows, endurance riding, national-level competition, and Olympic disciplines.

Through in-depth equine science and practical investigations, students develop an understanding of horse health, behavior, nutrition, and care. They'll explore the responsibilities of keeping horses at home, compare boarding arrangements and expectations, and examine the financial and practical considerations involved in different equestrian pursuits.

Immersion encourages students to explore their interests, understand their options, and develop the knowledge needed to make informed, responsible decisions about a life with horses.

Pathways - Enterprise

Exploring the Equine Industry

The equine industry offers a wide range of professional opportunities that extend far beyond riding, training, and traditional barn management.

Enterprise introduces students to the knowledge, skills, and responsibilities associated with equine-related careers and businesses. Through advanced equine science and practical investigations, students explore the scientific, financial, organizational, and management considerations involved in working professionally with horses.

From equine health and facility management to education, breeding, business, and specialized services, students investigate the many ways their interests and abilities might connect with opportunities in the equine industry.

Enterprise encourages students to think critically, explore career possibilities, and develop an understanding of the responsibilities and decisions involved in pursuing professional opportunities with horses.

Exploring Both Paths

Students won't have to choose just one direction! A combined Pathways option is also envisioned, bringing Immersion and Enterprise together.

With shared equine science content and activities specific to each track, this option will allow learners to explore both personal and professional perspectives without duplicating the foundational material.
